Meshtastic is an open-source project that allow you to creates a decentralized, off-grid mesh networks for long-range (LoRa) communication using inexpensive radio devices. A decentralized mesh network is a type of network where nodes connect directly with one another in an non-hierarchical infrastructure to route data without the need for a centralized server. This creates a self-healing/resilient system that us especially useful in emergency situations where critical communication infrastructure like the internet or cell phones may be unavailable. It allows users to send text messages, GPS locations, and other data without internet or cell service using a network of devices that “hop” messages to each other.
How it works
- Mesh network: Each Meshtastic device acts as a “node” in a mesh network. If a device can’t reach another directly, it will forward the message to other devices in its range, allowing messages to travel longer distances through a chain of inter-connected devices.
- LoRa technology: The system uses LoRa (Long Range) radio protocol, which is a low-power, long-range radio technology that doesn’t require a license to operate in most regions.
- Off-grid communication: The entire network operates independently of traditional infrastructure like cell towers and the internet.
- Decentralized: The network is decentralized, meaning it doesn’t rely on a central server to function.
Key features
- Long-range: Messages can be sent over long distances by hopping between devices.
- Low-power: Devices can be powered by batteries or solar panels.
- Portable: The system runs on small, affordable devices, making it easy to take with you.
- No license: It does not require a special license to operate.
- Easy to use: With a user-friendly interface, it can be set up on a variety of devices.
Common uses:
- Communication at large events like music festivals where cell networks are often overloaded
- Outdoor activities like hiking and camping in areas without cell service
- Emergency and disaster response situations where internet and cellular service are disrupted.
To get started with Meshtastic, first you will need a LoRa device. I recommend starting off with one of the more popular devices so documentation and support are easy to find while you learn how things work. Two of the more popular starting options are the WisBlock and HelTec systems. For more information about these devices, and some suggestions on what to buy and where, see our article named Meshtastic Devices.
